EBITDA shows up in nearly every earnings call and private equity pitch deck because it makes a business look bigger and steadier than its actual cash profit. The gap between the two is not an accounting technicality; for a capital-intensive business it can be the difference between a company that is genuinely healthy and one that is slowly running out of cash.
The core principle
EBITDA stands for earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization: EBITDA = net income + interest + taxes + depreciation + amortization. It is built by starting with reported net income and adding back four categories of expense that vary based on financing structure, tax jurisdiction, and accounting method rather than on how the underlying business actually operates day to day. The stated purpose is to approximate the cash-generating power of core operations in a form that is comparable across companies with different capital structures, tax rates, and asset bases.
