Margin: Borrowed Money That Multiplies Every Outcome, Not Just the Good Ones
Buying on margin lets you control a larger position than your own cash would support, by borrowing the difference from your broker against the securities you already hold. It is the fastest way to turn a modest market move into a large one, in whichever direction the market happens to go, and the interest meter keeps running regardless of which direction that turns out to be.
The core principle
A margin account is a brokerage account that permits you to borrow money against the value of your existing holdings in order to purchase additional securities. In the United States, Regulation T generally caps initial equity purchases on margin at 50% borrowed, meaning you can control up to twice the position your cash alone would buy, a ratio commonly called 2x leverage. Example 2: how little decline it takes to wipe out the equity. With 2x leverage, the underlying position only needs to fall by roughly 50% before your own equity, ignoring interest, hits zero: on the $40,000 position above, a 50% decline reduces it to $20,000, exactly equal to the $20,000 still owed to the broker, meaning your original $20,000 is fully gone. But brokers do not wait for equity to reach zero; they require a maintenance margin, typically requiring equity to stay above roughly 25% to 30% of the position's value at all times. Solving for the decline that triggers a maintenance call: if equity must stay at or above 25% of position value, and you started with 50% equity ($20,000 of $40,000), the position can fall by roughly 1 − (loan / (position value x (1 − maintenance %))), which works out to a decline of only about 33% before a margin call is triggered, not the full 50% that would wipe out the equity entirely. Leverage does not just amplify losses, it also shrinks the amount of room you have before the broker intervenes.
