Individual ratios rarely tell you what to do; the skill of financial statement analysis is combining several of them into one coherent narrative. This article works one complete, fictional two-year case from raw numbers to a conclusion, the same sequence a professional analyst runs on every company before forming a view.
The company and the two years of data
Consider a fictional mid-size outdoor equipment manufacturer, Cascade Outdoor Supply Co., over two consecutive fiscal years. In Year 1, the company reported revenue of $50,000,000, cost of goods sold of $32,000,000, selling and administrative expenses of $10,000,000, net income of $5,500,000, total assets of $40,000,000, shareholders' equity of $20,000,000, current assets of $12,000,000, and current liabilities of $6,000,000. In Year 2, revenue rose to $58,000,000, cost of goods sold rose to $39,000,000, selling and administrative expenses rose to $11,000,000, net income came in at $5,000,000, total assets rose to $46,000,000, shareholders' equity rose to $21,000,000, current assets rose to $13,000,000, and current liabilities rose to $8,000,000. On the surface, the headline is encouraging: revenue grew 16% year over year, and the company is clearly larger than it was twelve months earlier. Whether it is a better business than it was twelve months earlier is a separate question, and the rest of this analysis answers it.
Before running a single ratio, it is worth noting what a reader relying only on the press release headline would see: revenue up double digits, total assets up 15%, and the company still solidly profitable in both years. Nothing in that summary is false, and nothing in it would prompt a typical reader to dig further. The entire value of the sequence that follows is in surfacing what that accurate but incomplete headline leaves out, using nothing more than arithmetic already available in the two years of filed statements above.
The analysis sequence
A disciplined read of any set of statements follows a consistent sequence rather than jumping straight to whichever ratio happens to look most flattering. Start with the top line and its immediate cost structure: is revenue growth translating into gross profit growth at a similar rate, or is gross margin compressing as it grows? Move next to overhead and operating margin: are selling and administrative costs growing faster or slower than revenue? Move to the bottom line and the return ratios: is net income and ROE keeping pace with the growth in the top line? Finally check the balance sheet for liquidity and leverage: is the company's short-term financial cushion holding steady, shrinking, or growing alongside the business? Only after running through all four checkpoints should an investor form a single-paragraph view of what is actually happening inside the company, rather than anchoring on the first number encountered.
Each checkpoint in the sequence is deliberately cheap to compute, requiring nothing beyond the figures already printed on the two statements, and deliberately ordered to move from the most easily manipulated number, revenue, toward the figures that are hardest to dress up, liquidity and leverage. A company can grow revenue through discounting, channel stuffing, or looser payment terms; it is considerably harder to simultaneously hide the resulting margin compression, weaker returns, and tighter liquidity cushion that those same tactics tend to produce over time.

If all four trends point the same healthy direction, that is meaningfully stronger evidence supporting the investment thesis than the revenue growth figure alone. If, as in the Cascade example, the trends diverge from the headline story, that is exactly the kind of disconnect worth investigating further, by reading management's own commentary in the filing, before deciding whether the growth is worth paying for at the company's current valuation.
It is worth emphasizing what this analysis does and does not conclude. It does not say Cascade is a bad company or an uninvestable stock; a single warning year is a reason to look further, not a verdict. It does say that an investor who bought Cascade based purely on the 16% revenue growth headline, without running the margin, return, and liquidity checks underneath it, would have missed a real and converging deterioration in the underlying business, and that gap between the headline and the substance is precisely what this four-step sequence is designed to close, regardless of which specific company the numbers happen to belong to.
