Float: The Small Number That Explains Wild Stock Swings
Two companies can report the identical number of shares outstanding and still trade nothing alike, because one has a fraction as many shares actually free to change hands. That gap explains why a stock with modest news can gap 30% in a session while a similarly sized peer barely moves on far bigger news.

A company's float is the count of shares actually available for public trading, calculated as float = shares outstanding − closely held and restricted shares.
