When an analyst says a stock or sector is a "buy," it is a vague, unmeasurable signal. When they say a portfolio is overweight that stock or sector, it is a precise, quantifiable statement about how much more of it is held relative to a specific, named benchmark, and precision is exactly what makes the term useful.

Being overweight means holding a larger percentage of an asset, sector, or country in a portfolio than that same asset, sector, or country represents in the relevant benchmark index.
